Different Ways to Complete a Radiologic Program

There are many ways to finish a Radiologic Technology program, leading to careers in a rewarding and challenging field. Some people attend two-year radiologic courses within hospital-based programs, after which they may earn a certificate or diploma. This type of radiologic training is popular because it can be completed relatively quickly, focusing on job-related areas. Hospital-based programs must have A.S. or A.A. degree-granting through an arrangement with a degree-granting school and take at least two (2) years to complete.
A Matter of Options
Radiologic Training programs are also offered at community colleges, vocational schools, radiology schools, and more prominent universities. Some portions of classes can often be completed online. The Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) recently offered a few free e-learning classes.
Whatever program you decide on, make sure it is accredited. According to the JRCERT, “Accreditation of an educational program assures students and graduates that the program will provide them with the requisite knowledge, skills, and values to competently perform the range of professional responsibilities expected by potential employers nationwide.”1
No matter which type of Radiologic Technology program you attend, your time will be divided between the classroom and a clinical externship. Students in accredited programs regularly work alongside doctors, nurses, and experienced Radiologic Technologists. This portion of the radiologic program, known as clinical rotations, allows students to gain hands-on experiences that strengthen their patient-care skills and technical knowledge acumen.
A Matter of Good Training
Radiologic training is appropriate for many students, even those who do not consider themselves technically adept. In a typical course, students learn anatomy, biology, radiation safety, physics, and more.
A good training program is part science and part art. Students train to use computers and other technologically advanced equipment to acquire and manipulate images. They also learn to communicate with patients, solve problems, and work with healthcare team members.
