Gurnick Academy of Medical Arts’ mission is to offer quality allied health and nursing programs that integrate professional skills, career-focused education, and hands-on practical experience by empowering students to develop and achieve their personal and career goals. The purpose of the Bachelor of Science in Nursing is to achieve distinction in the undergraduate nursing program and to advance the mission of Gurnick Academy of Medical Arts by:

  1. Actively prepare the baccalaureate student to assume roles in nursing practice following the regulatory and accrediting agencies.

B.S. in Nursing (BSN) Program Description

Students will study a wide range of curricular content required for licensure by the California Board of Registered Nursing. To develop an advanced skill base in demand by employers, students will also study the organization and function of health services, ethics and law in health care, writing skills for health professionals, leadership and management, nursing research, and patient education essentials.

Emphasis will be placed on evidence-based practice and critical thinking skills to provide safe and effective care to patients from diverse and multicultural populations and communities across the lifespan. Students will also take Community Health Nursing, which includes certification in reporting child abuse and disaster management, following the Public Health California Code of Regulations’ requirements.

B.S. in Nursing (BSN) Program (8 semesters for a total of 120 Semester Credit Hours):
Students will take 50 Semester-Credit Hours of General Education courses via online delivery in the program’s first three semesters.

 

The fourth semester is 15 weeks and consists of 14 Semester Credit Hours (9—lectures, 5—clinical and skills labs). Courses include Fundamentals of Nursing, including theory, skills, clinical, Health Assessment, and Pharmacology. Theory and Lab will be held Monday through Friday. The clinical schedule may vary depending on clinical site availability.

 

The fifth semester consists of 13 semester credit hours (9—lectures, 4—clinical). Courses include Pathophysiology, Introduction to Med/Surg I Theory and Clinical, and Intermediate Med/Surg Theory and Clinical. Classes will be held Monday through Friday. The clinical schedule may vary depending on clinical site availability.

 

The sixth semester consists of 14.5 semester credit hours (9—lectures, 5.5—clinical). Courses include Mental Health Theory and Clinical, Maternal/Newborn Theory and Clinical, and Advanced Med/Surg I Theory and Clinical. Theory and Lab will be held Monday through Friday. The clinical schedule may vary depending on clinical site availability.

 

The seventh semester consists of 14.5 semester credit hours (9—lectures, 5.5—clinical). Courses include Care of Children Theory and Clinical, Complex Med-Surg Theory and Clinical/Leadership, Community Health Theory, and Practicum. Classes will be held Monday through Friday. The clinical schedule may vary depending on clinical site availability.

 

The eight-semester consists of 14 semester credit hours (12—lectures, 2—clinical). Courses include Leadership Theory and Practicum, Nursing Research, Nursing Informatics, and BSN Capstone Portfolio. Classes will be held Monday through Friday. The clinical schedule may vary depending on clinical site availability.

 

This pathway receives 1,427 hours of didactic and 1,080 hours of clinical and lab instruction, allowing them to apply the lecture topics practically.

    B.S. in Nursing (BSN) Program Admission Requirements

    1. The applicant must meet the following admission policies of Gurnick Academy of Medical Arts:  immunization, health screening, background check, and CPR certification. (See Policies of Gurnick Academy of Medical Arts in the School Catalog and “Admissions.”)
    2. Applicants must submit a completed application. It is recommended that interested applicants fill out the application with the admission advisor.
    3. Applicants must take an Admission Assessment test: the Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS VII). It tests math, reading, English and language use, and science. All students are encouraged to log on to atitesting.com for study material and other valuable resources and information. The TEAS VII Test Passing score = 64% or better.
    4. Applicants will be asked to pass an interview with the nursing program director or associate program director or Assistant Program Director or designee in person or via a virtual conferencing platform, if necessary.
    5. Applicants must submit a two to three (2 – 3) pages written essay on why they have chosen professional nursing as a career.
    6. The applicant will submit proof of health-related and community work, e.g., volunteering at health fairs, hospitals, and clinics, working with the homeless, mentoring, tutoring other students, or Big Brother or Big Sister. These experiences must be substantiated with a document or letter of verification on formal organizational stationery.
    7. Applicants will be rank-ordered based on the following score, which includes:
      • Admission Assessment Test (TEAS)
      • Personal Interview
      • Written Essay
      • Three (3) Letters of Recommendation
      • Community Work
      • Health-Related Experience.

B.S. in Nursing (BSN) Program Licensure, Certification, and Registry Disclaimer

Students must take the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-RN) if they have never been licensed as registered nurses in another state nor passed the national licensing examination. If you are licensed in Canada, you must take the NCLEX-RN unless you have passed an acceptable five-part Canadian examination. You must have completed an educational program meeting all California requirements. If you lack any academic requirements, you must complete an approved course in that subject before taking the examination.

 

The NCLEX-RN is administered by Computerized Adaptive Testing (CAT) and is designed to test knowledge, skills, and abilities essential to safe and effective nursing practice at the entry level. There is continuous, year-round testing with CAT, allowing eligible candidates to schedule their examination on a date and at the location of their choice.

 

Examination applicants should submit their application to the Board at least six to eight weeks before taking the examination to allow time to process and receive all required documents. Note: Application processing times vary depending on workload volumes received.

 

The Board will evaluate your application, and if found eligible, you will be provided with essential and detailed instructions regarding the registration process with the NCLEX testing service. PLEASE NOTE: All NCLEX examination registrations with the NCLEX testing service will remain effective for 365 days. Candidates who are not made eligible by our Board within 365 days will forfeit their registration and fee with the NCLEX testing service. The Board encourages candidates to wait until they are made Board eligible before registering with the NCLEX testing service.

  1. Complete “Application for Licensure by Examination,” including US Social Security Number (SSN) or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN).
  2. Complete fingerprints using Live Scan or fingerprint card (Hard Card) processing method.
  3. One recent 2” by 2” passport-type photograph is attached to the reverse side of the “Application for Licensure by Examination.” 
  4. Complete “Request for Accommodation of Disabilities” and accompanying form(s) if applicable.

The financial aid programs are designed to assist students with inadequate financial resources to meet their education’s total cost. Each campus has a Financial Aid Advisor who can help students with any financial aid questions.

  • According to the National Council of State Boards of Nursing, a leader in regulatory information, a Registered Nurse (RN) is an individual who has met the following requirements. They have graduated from a state-approved school of nursing with either an associate or bachelor’s degree level education and passed the NCLEX-RN Examination, and are licensed by a state board of nursing, allowing them to provide patient care.1 The educational requirements for the role can be either associate or bachelor-level degrees.

  • One becomes a Registered Nurse by attending an academically accredited program, obtaining a qualifying degree, and then sitting for and passing the NCLEX-RN exam to obtain licensure. 

    Qualifying degrees for Registered Nurses include either:

    a)  Two-year Associate of Science-level degree;
    b)  Four-year Bachelor of Science-level degree. 

    Two-year associate degrees fulfilling Registered Nursing eligibility include:

    a)  Associate of Science in Nursing (ADN); 
    b)  Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN); 
    c)  Associate of Applied Science in Nursing (AAS).1 

    A qualifying four-year degree for Registered Nurses is the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN). The BSN represents a more significant investment of time and money than an associate degree or diploma and is more comprehensive. He or she practices under the direction of a Physician and/or a Registered Nurse or other advanced healthcare professional.3

  • According to Career Profiles, an Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) or Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) are two-year degrees for those seeking to become Registered Nurses.1 While Bachelor Degrees in Nursing (BSNs) are four-year programs for those seeking to become Registered Nurses.*1 Both the ADN/ASN and BSN degrees qualify students to sit for the NCLEX-RN exam and apply for RN licensure.1 

    According to Career Profiles, ADN programs generally focus more on practical skills, while BSN programs delve more deeply into theoretical knowledge. However, the core curriculum for both programs is typically quite similar, with courses in community health nursing, gerontological nursing, pediatrics, maternal and newborn nursing, and psychiatric nursing. BSN programs include courses not offered in ADN programs, such as nursing technology, research, and informatics.1

  • According to NurseChoice, the term nurse was first applied in the 14th century. It referred to “someone who cared for children or breastfed them, as in a `wet-nurse.’” However, according to NurseChoice, the term nurse wasn’t used until the 16th century.1 (International Journal of Caring Sciences). “During Roman civilization, deaconesses, aka specialized nuns, helped relieve the suffering of the elderly, impoverished, and prisoners.” Until a certain point in history, most sick people were cared for in their homes and by their families.1

    Additionally, Gurnick Academy of Medical Arts is approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing (BRN) to provide the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program.

    Gurnick Academy of Medical Arts is a private institution approved to operate by the California Bureau for Private Postsecondary Education. Approval to operate means the institution is compliant with the minimum standards in the California Private Postsecondary Education Act (CPPEA) of 2009 (as amended) and Division 7.5 of Title 5 of the California Code of Regulations. CPPEA governs the Bureau for Private Postsecondary Education.

  • Financial aid is available for those who qualify. Gurnick Academy of Medical Arts participates in various federal and state student financial assistance programs.

  • Depending on individual needs or preferences, students may be able to work during the program. However, this depends on the type of work, each student’s individual needs, work-study balances, and life schedules and commitments. 

    There are some guidelines for study/life balance. The Hechinger Report sites a 2018 Georgetown University study regarding students working while enrolled in higher education. According to the report, “Students who worked had lower grades and were more likely to drop out” than those who did not work during their college tenure. The report states, “The risk was especially high for low-income students. Other studies seem to concur with this report. The conventional advice to students is to try to work under 15 hours a week if they want to finish their degrees,” says the article.1

  • This program offers a four-year Bachelor of Science-level degree.

  • After completing their respective training programs, all nurses must pass state-board NCLEX licensing exams. Registered Nurses sit for the NCLEX-RN. 

  • Test preparation is strongly emphasized throughout our students’ entire curriculum at Gurnick Academy of Medical Arts.

  • According to the online resource, Minority Nurse, poor management, and the lack of support from their management teams are among the most significant complaints nurses have. What makes a poor manager? Nurses may say it does not value open communication and feedback from his or her staff.1 Another chief complaint within the profession seems to be burnout. Most often, burnout is due to staffing shortages.

  • According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, Registered Nurses in California made a median annual wage of $120,5601 as of May 2020. While the national median annual pay for Registered Nurses in 2021 was $77,600 per year or $37.31 per hour.2

    However, it’s vital to remember salaries differ considerably based on several factors, including years of experience, schooling, workplace setting, geographic location, and other variables.

  • It appears the hat came from the era when “deaconesses” or nuns serving as nurses first put them on as a type of habit. Later they were differentiated by Florence Nightingale for the profession.1

    The 60s and 70s saw a decline, if not indifference to the “hat.” Some cite infection control, and others cite nuisance or head and hair problems with its wearing.1 By the late 1980s, nurses’ caps’ use disappeared in US medical facilities. According to the site Nursing Uniforms, nurses adapted to scrubs, and the traditional white uniform with its symbolic cap was also abandoned. The site states that the white uniform was left because simultaneously, more men entered the nursing profession, and unisex scrubs entered vogue.2 Additionally, through the years, US clothing has become less formal. 

    The cute little white hat disappeared with all the dress formality of nurses, many of whom once wore all white from top to bottom—hose, shoes, and all.

However, the term APRN can be an umbrella term for nursing professionals who have earned upper-level degrees, including master’s or doctoral degrees. According to the National Council of State Boards of Nursing, APRNs include these nurse careers: clinical nurse specialists (CNS), nurse practitioners (NPs), certified nurse-midwives (CNMs), and nurse anesthetists (CRNAs).1

  • Yes. According to the NurseJournal, the profession offers two distinct doctorate-level educational pathways. These include the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) and the Ph.D. in Nursing Programs. According to the Journal, the DNP is generally sought by those pursuing leadership roles within clinical settings. At the same time, the Ph.D. route is usually pursued by those wishing to teach at post-secondary levels or engage in research. After earning bachelorette and master’s degrees and certifications, DNP certification can be completed in approximately two years, while the Ph.D. requires 4–7 years.1
