Description
This program is designed for people who plan to work for a clinical laboratory or public health department or a clinic or hospital. The course combines 40-hours classroom instruction with a 40-hours off-site clinical internship to provide students with a comprehensive learning experience. Lectures include but are not limited to the anatomy and medical terminology pertaining to the circulatory system, specimen collection, risk factors, complications and quality assurance in specimen collection. Practical instruction provides hands-on training in venipuncture technique with procedures verified through a skills check-off system. The 40-hour externship includes at minimum 50 successful venipunctures and 10 skin punctures.
Admission Requirements
To be considered for admission into the Phlebotomy Technician Program the applicant must meet the following criteria:
- Applicant must have graduated from high school, or earned a GED and be at least 18 years of age.*
- Applicant must pay all applicable fees, as per the current published fee schedule or make other payment arrangements acceptable to the school.
- Applicant must complete a Scholastic Level Exam (SLE) with a score of at least 16.
- Applicant must complete the enrollment agreement.
* The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) now only accepts official transcript evaluations completed by American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers (AACRAO).

State Certification for Phlebotomist Technicians
It′s required to be state certified to work as a phlebotomist. Upon completion of the program students will receive a certificate of completion and become eligible for certification in the State of California as a Certified Phlebotomist Technician level 1 through DHS, Field Services.

- 50% of our Main Campus, San Mateo campus: students come from Daly City, Fremont, San Mateo, San Jose, Hayward, Belmont and Union City. 21% from other Bay Area cities - Burlingame, Foster City, Redwood City, Mountain View, Cupertino, Palo Alto and San Francisco.
- More than 45% of our Concord Campus: students come from Antioch, Benicia, Concord, Pleasant Hill and San Ramon, California. 24% come from Brentwood, Fairfield, Martinez, Oakland, Pittsburg, Richmond, Sacramento, Vallejo and Walnut Creek.
- More than 34% of our Fresno Campus: students come from Fresno. More than 20% of our Modesto Campus: students come from Modesto. Of course there are many nursing students from neighboring cities to Modesto and Fresno who choose Gurnick Academy. For example, Modesto campus has students from Atwater, Ceres, Escalon, Livingston, Manteca, Merced, Oakdale, Riverbank, Sonora, Stockton, Tracy, Turlock, and Fresno - from Clovis, Hanford, Lemoore, Madera, Sanger and Visalia.
