Healthcare Career Assessment Tools For You

However, even if you’re a renascence student, you likely won’t enjoy ALL of our programs equally. You will undoubtedly have favorite courses and preferential models. In some curriculum areas, you will be remiss if you can’t study further. Conversely, there will be other classes you’re grateful to get through. 

For this reason, it’s crucial to accurately ascertain your strengths, weaknesses, and areas for positive growth. It makes the most sense to do this before registering for a course. One straightforward way to assess your dominant strengths and preferences is to use a good assessment tool.

Myers-Briggs

 The most widely used personality test is the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator Career Report®1 (MBTI).® As an assessment tool, MBTI® measures one’s psychological preferences, personal perceptions, and processes for decision-making.1 Consequently, this instrument may also help identify jobs and occupations specifically as they align with one’s personality type. 

In short, Isabel Briggs Myers and Katharine Briggs developed the MBTI® tool based on Carl Jung’s Personality Types theory.2 Jung initially identified eight personality types. Ultimately, he broke these down into four psychological areas: thinking and feeling (rational functions) and sensation and intuition (irrational functions). 

In addition, Jung distinguished introversion vs. extraversion. According to Jung, every person possesses dominant attitudes and primary functions classified within personality types. According to Jung, these types were specifically:

  • Extraverted Thinking (ET);
  • Introverted Thinking (IT);
  • Extraverted Feeling (EF);
  • Introverted Feeling (IF);
  • Extraverted Sensation (ES);
  • Introverted Sensation (IS);
  • Extraverted Intuitive (EN);
  • Introverted Intuitive (IN).2*

*Traits Key: Extraversion (E); Sensing (S); Thinking (T); Judgment (J); Introversion (I); iNtuition (N); Feeling (F); Perception (P).

Strong Interest Inventory

A second widely used test is the Strong Interest Inventory (SII). Likewise, this test provides

career assessments and educational guidance. SII was first developed in 1927 by Psychologist E.K. Strong, Jr., and later revised by Jo-Ida Hansen and David Campbell. Accordingly, the modern version of the SII is based on the Holland Codes by Psychologist John L. Holland. Yet, in contrast to other tests, this tool assesses one’s interests rather than personality type.

However, when using personality tests, be careful not to allow test results alone to steer you to or from your passion or future “calling.” You must enroll in an academic trajectory that builds your most fulfilling life and benefits those around you.
