MRIs

The Golden State

The first concept of Magnetic Resonance Imaging was called Nuclear Magnetic Resonance, or NMR.1

1

“The Golden State,” a.k.a. California, is a moniker dating back to a book title by Eliza Farnhamin around 1856. Admittedly the book promoted California’s many attractions, but the nickname didn’t become official until 1968.2

A physicist named Isidor Isaac Rabi developed a ground-breaking method to measure the properties of atoms in the 1930s.3

2

California became the 31st state on September 9, 1850.4

The first MRI was developed in the early 70s, but it wasn’t until 1977 that medical professionals performed the MRI scan on a living human being.3

3

California has the 4th-biggest economy in the world.5

The main magnet in an MRI magnetic field is 140,000 times stronger than the Earth’s.6

4

California is the most populated U.S. state. with over 39 million people (according to July 2022 Census Bureau). Of note, California is much larger than Texas, which is the second largest with a population of 30 million.7

The magnets used in MRI scanners also must be cooled to a temperature of absolute zero. This cooling is typically done with liquid hydrogen to take the magnets down to 0 degrees Fahrenheit.6

5

Much of California has a Mediterranean-like climate, including warm, dry summers and mild, wet winters. Within coastal areas, the average daily temperatures hover around 70°F, yet can spike to 80°F or more on summer days. By and large, freezing temperatures are rare in the state.8

While it’s called an image, an MRI scan is not a photograph. Instead, it’s the culmination of magnetic fields and radio waves mapped by a computer using a unique signal for each cell type.3 Ironically, MRIs are considered one of the best ways to capture “images.”

6

California is eclectic. From coastal areas like Los Angeles to rugged areas like Bakersfield or the mountains. It has oceans, desert terrain, Mount Shasta, Mount Whitney, and the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Its regions may be metropolitan or downright rural. They are destination places as well as just average American towns.

It is estimated that nearly 40 million MRI scans are performed annually in the US.9

7

Roughly 18 million people visit Disneyland per year.10

Radiology involves the study of internal organ images within the human body. According to the Oxford Languages Dictionary, it is the science dealing with X-rays and other high-energy radiation, especially for diagnosing and treating disease.1 Before the advent of diagnostic imaging, only a patient’s death allowed doctors to study the body’s internal organs and structures […]
