Six Tips For Your Medical Assistant Education

Do you want to begin your journey as a Medical Assistant but are unsure what to expect? Getting an education is an investment, so it’s essential to be prepared to do your best. To feel more confident and maximize your Medical Assisting education, consider these six (6) tips.

Tip 1. Choose the Right Medical Assistant Education

First, where you attend school matters. It’s essential to be in an environment where one feels they can learn at optimum levels and exit equipped to enter the healthcare field confidently and surely. To get a clear idea of your expectations, try writing a list of things you want and need in a school. When researching different programs, some ideas for your checklist should include tuition, program length, classroom size, program criteria, training, accreditation, location, school culture, and amenities such as equipment, labs, and library services. One of the most critical aspects of our program is our clinical training portion.

During clinical training, students gain practical experience at an affiliated clinical site. Many find clinical rotations a great way to gain real-life experience while practicing their skills with actual patients.

Tip 2. Develop Good Study Habits

Second, wisely managing one’s time and staying organized are skills that help one get the most from one’s education. When you have a schedule and set aside time to study, you are less likely to be distracted or forget a meaningful concept or assignment. We understand it can be hard to explore outside of school, especially with other commitments. If you manage your time wisely, you can focus, understand, and prepare more for your future as a Medical Assistant.

Some study tips for future medical assistants include:

  • Find a quiet place with no distractions. If your phone is a distraction, turn it off or put it on airplane mode for an allotted time.
  • Create flashcards or highlight important information.
  • Study during key times of the day (or night). If you are no good after 10 PM, hit the books earlier.
  • Don’t be afraid to start at the beginning of the subject matter. Review Chapter 1 if needed, and review it again if still needed.

Tip 3. Build Educational Relationships

Third, connecting with people is an important attribute to have as a Medical Assistant and in life. People appreciate those who genuinely care and ask sincere questions. While in school, build relationships and study pals. The following person you learn from could be a fellow student sitting next to you during lectures, a patient you are helping during clinical training, or an instructor.

Every contact is an opportunity to either learn or teach. Ask questions, investigate options, share class notes, pass on study tips, and form creative tricks to memorize. Have study parties. Make up clever acronyms and songs to recite large quantities of vocabulary.

Tip 4. Stay Healthy

Fourth, remember to bring your best self to class. Bringing your best includes taking care of your body. A healthy body benefits you and those around you (fellow students, patients, and teachers). Wellness provides one more energy, care, and focus during school.

Three ways to better your health or stay well include a healthy diet, sufficient sleep, and regular exercise. Incorporating these three things into a daily routine can fuel one’s body and result in learning better and being more efficient. Fuel your inner learning beast—drink more water, eat those veggies, and get to bed early!
