LVN Advancement Opportunities
Date: March 11, 2019
The job of an LVN is very tough, with many challenges. An LVN faces the prospect of infection from bedsores, the risk of dangerous diseases such as hepatitis, and dealing with many patients’ reactions. Fortunately, many healthcare schools offer an LVN program to progress from this role to an RN or Registered Nurse’s role.
Licensed Vocational Nurses would need to complete at least two years of service in their current healthcare facility role. Upon completing the desired time, an LVN can opt for a unique year-long program that allows them to get promoted to the next level. The Department of Labor’s Statistical Bureau (BLS) has reported that approximately 1,200 schools offer this program in the United States.
The schools that have started this type of program have found a high degree of LVN attrition due to the demand for RNs in healthcare organizations. LVNs enroll in this program to study human anatomy, microbiology, physiology, psychology, mathematics, and other subjects. Those students scoring a GPA higher than 2.5 may qualify to be an RN within the healthcare school.
Many LVNs do not complete this program. When polled, LVNs currently working in healthcare organizations cited the RN program’s one-year waiting period as the reason. Under these conditions, the LVN would have had to wait one year after completing the program to start working as an RN.
The scenario has changed today, with many RN advancement programs being made available as summer courses. Enrolling in these summer courses allows an LVN to complete its education while working as an LVN. This curriculum model has found increased acceptance among LVN, and the enrollments are expanding every day.
Working the hard grind as an LVN is vital for moving up the ladder in an RN’s role. Putting long hours and demonstrating exceptional performance during an LVN’s functions would make a competent RN. Kindly note that an LVN deals with many challenges.
A lot of healthcare institutions across the States require Registered Nurses. The only way to move into a Registered Nurse’s role is by spending a couple of years as an LVN. Spend a couple of years as an LVN and enroll with the program promoted by many healthcare schools. Pass the training program with a minimum score of 2.5, and you are on the way to becoming an RN. It is worth noting that the role titles may differ, but the essence of both roles is to provide quality healthcare assistance to patients.
