The Ultrasound Technology Program is proud to announce Essential Medical Bio-Science’s addition to the prerequisite line-up for students to better comprehend human biology and general body chemistry. The course will precede Anatomy, Physiology, and Medical Terminology to enforce the body’s function structure. It also provides consistency in the San Mateo Campus, with all the programs introducing themselves with the same preliminary course.

Students may also transfer credit from other accredited institutions for three prerequisite courses. Upon showing proof of completing equivalent courses with a “C” within the past five (5) years, challenge exams may be taken for the following:

    • Essential Medical Bio-Science
    • Anatomy, Physiology, and Medical Terminology
    • Cross-Sectional Anatomy

Gurnick Academy of Medical Arts’ new policy will include an opportunity for the student to observe a sonographer at a clinical site during their prerequisite courses to understand better the day-to-day activity involved in this exciting career. Gurnick Academy of Medical Arts has an established plan for language equivalency and transcript evaluations for prospective students holding a foreign degree. Please see our website for a suggested list of accepted evaluating companies.

Foreign degree applicants must also bring proof before admission into the ultrasound program of successful completion of an ESL class equal to ESL 26/ English 1A (Foothill-De Anza community college system) or to successfully pass the TOEFL test with the following minimum scores: 560 for the PBT (paper-based test); 220 for the CBT (computer-based test); and 87 for the iBT (internet-based test).

Students now have the rare opportunity to increase their skills from one of eight ultrasound systems with an upgraded scan laboratory. The systems include:

    • Toshiba Nemio
    • Ultrasonix
    • Two (2) Siemens Ellegras
    • Acuson Aspen
    • Acuson Sequoia 512
    • Medison SA 4D Live Ultrasound Systems
    • MedSim Ultrasound Training Simulator

The equipment is used in instructional scanning sessions with students before entering the clinical setting. To streamline their externship experiences’ commencement, students will have all of their immunizations completed before enrollment.
